Battle of the Sexes?

On the Today Show Friday, there was a story about the two blockbuster movies out right now, Sex and the City and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. So far, a pretty standard report. It was the angle they used that bothered me. The entire report was based on the idea that men would want to see Indiana Jones, and women would want to see Samantha Jones Huh?

I resent the assumption that women always prefer "chick flicks" and only go to action-adventure movies to please their man. I don’t believe for a minute that gender really plays that much of a part in movie selection. I had dinner with a close friend last week, and she was talking about her desire to move from writing romance to writing action-adventure for women. I hope she does (and I have a plan or two myself—see that evil grin?)

For months the anticipation for the new Indiana Jones movie has been everywhere. Many of the women I know have expressed excitement about seeing it, as well as the women on the groups/email loops I’m on (and I’m on quite a few). Women are excited about the movie. I haven’t heard one word from a woman saying that her husband or boyfriend dragged her to the theater. Not one!

I’m sure both movies will do quite well, they both have built-in audiences who have and will rush to the theatres. There is a large enough audience to ensure both make millions.

Personally, I’m looking forward to see a sexy man doing some very active archeology. But that’s just me.
