Party Time!

Tomorrow is party day, as AJ Hampton hosts the All Author Bash. This is a multi-author event, hosted on a discussion board, and it lasts all day. So, no matter what time zone you're in, no matter what your schedule is like, you can come on down! There'll be excerpts, discussions, games, prizes, polls, you name it and it'll probably be there. :)

Check it out, tomorrow!

Got Romance Novels?

First the whole males like Indy and females like Sex thing. And now MSNBC is dissing the romance genre. It looks like a regular old book promo. Not a big deal. But buried in the middle of an excerpt from Danielle Steel's new book, is a little blue box that says "Vote: Do you read romance novels?" Still not a big deal, except when you actually look at the options.

1. Yes, yes, yes! Bodice-rippers are my ultimate escape.
2. No way.
I don't touch those books.
3. Sometimes, while on vacation or at the beach.

Huh? I clicked #1, then commented. And I'm not alone. In spite of the antiquated--and insulting--wording, the first option is winning--though not by a lot. Adding the numbers of 1 &3 gives a more realistic picture, but really!

Feel free to go and click. Overwhelm the sexist idiots at NBC. Maybe they'll figure out that women are actually half of the world's population. That we read, watch news shows, and vote in polls. I know there are intelligent people at NBC--many of them women. Now if the powers that be would let them do their jobs.

Speaking of women, I posted today at the Otherworld Diner on the importance of the heroine in romance novels. While you're there, check out the great posts from my fellow employees. I'm always blown away by the fantastic writing, and the different takes on the same subject. Have a great weekend!

Battle of the Sexes?

On the Today Show Friday, there was a story about the two blockbuster movies out right now, Sex and the City and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. So far, a pretty standard report. It was the angle they used that bothered me. The entire report was based on the idea that men would want to see Indiana Jones, and women would want to see Samantha Jones Huh?

I resent the assumption that women always prefer "chick flicks" and only go to action-adventure movies to please their man. I don’t believe for a minute that gender really plays that much of a part in movie selection. I had dinner with a close friend last week, and she was talking about her desire to move from writing romance to writing action-adventure for women. I hope she does (and I have a plan or two myself—see that evil grin?)

For months the anticipation for the new Indiana Jones movie has been everywhere. Many of the women I know have expressed excitement about seeing it, as well as the women on the groups/email loops I’m on (and I’m on quite a few). Women are excited about the movie. I haven’t heard one word from a woman saying that her husband or boyfriend dragged her to the theater. Not one!

I’m sure both movies will do quite well, they both have built-in audiences who have and will rush to the theatres. There is a large enough audience to ensure both make millions.

Personally, I’m looking forward to see a sexy man doing some very active archeology. But that’s just me.
